Linux hosting vs. Windows hosting

When searching for a web host you are bound to come across two major options, i.e. Windows and Linux in addition to a few other lesser-known options in the way of an operating system used on the server. Now many people who use a Windows operating system on their computers think that it would be best since they use the same OS on the computers. However, in reality, there is no big difference between a web host using Windows or Linux.

A few small differences can be spotted if you really pay close attention. The first difference is in how you are accessing the server. While both Linux and Windows offer excellent FTP access, it is only Linux, which will generally also offer SSH and telnet access (telnet is offered by few hosting providers). FTP or File Transfer Protocol as it is called is a way for you to access your files and transfer files from your hard drive directly to the web server. SSH is primarily used to open up a window to the web server which allows for you to manipulate files directly using the command line.

Writing Pages

Linux and Windows servers both serve HTML pages and also support JavaScript in addition to many other options. However, generally, Windows servers will use file names such as *.htm. while *.html will be used by Linux servers other than that there is no real difference. People who want to use frontPage extensions will benefit from using a Windows server as opposed to its Linux counterpart but there are a few Linux servers that will also offer support for FrontPage extensions.

CGI

Both Perl and CGI are supported by Linux and Windows servers, but it is more common on Linux servers. If you require programs such as forms to run on your web page, you will have to ensure that your hosting serve has CGI support. Security

Your security is very important, and some people will argue that Windows servers tend to be more vulnerable. However, the reality is that they both have security problems. The security of your website is more important at the level of your service’s admin level so if your administrator is good, your server is going to be more secure.
